Recap 4/24/05: 22-11 Win vs. Los Monos
Six HRs in First Three Innings Highlight Win
Six HRs in the first three innings highlighted today's win vs. Los Monos. Hey, at this level any Home Run is a highlight, but Steve P.'s Grand Slam in the first and Mo's 2-HR day deserve special mention. Props also to Mike G. for his second of the season, Dennis for his third, and JROD for his first (of many, no doubt).
Highlights
Pitching - After walking the first couple of Monos batters, Jim settled in to pitch four strong innings getting his second straight win (4 innings does it in our book). Seriously, we could have kept Jim in for 5 (both weeks) but wanted to take a look at some other guys. Mike G. pitched well and didn't walk anyone, but was hampered by a defense with about, oh, maybe 9 guys playing out of position. Steve got the pitching thing out of his system but did make a nifty tackle at the plate to record an out on a passed ball. I did some quick internet research and found out that Steve's alter-ego Jim Thorpe, wasn't much of a pitcher either, with a gaudy 10.5 ERA over his 4 career innings pitched. Dennis threw one pitch to get the final defensive out and has now recorded 4 outs with his last three pitches.
Hitting - I am starting to come to grips with the fact that we've got a pretty damned good offensive club. I am encouraged by the emergence of Mike G. as a power-hitter along with Mo, Steve, JROD, and occasional pop throughout the lineup and LOTS of guys who hit singles and gappers and just flat out get on base. A number of guys noted that this is the best hitting ballclub they have played on. I know one thing for sure: this is the best hitting ballclub I have played on or managed. I also know we've got a couple of guys who aren't even firing on all cylinders yet. When that happens, look out.
In all, we had 23 hits in 6 2/3 innings (with an unusually "tight" book) and had 7 walks and just 3 strikeouts. For the second straight game, every Black Sox had a hit.

Defense
Maybe not our best outing, but still some nice plays. Steve was solid behind the plate for the first four innings. Ron had a couple of nice plays in the outfield. Mo had a nice snag on a line-drive to kill a rally in the second inning.
Upcoming
Next week we've got the Classic Cards at 1:30 at Mar Vista HS. I don't think anyone's out for the game, correct me if I'm wrong.
